The Move

Hello, fellow fibre freaks, and welcome to Sylvia's House of Fuzzy Crack.

Now, before you get your hackles up, I mean that in the nicest possible way. Sylvia is the oh-so-wholesome pusher of the gentlest and most delectable of addictive goods: fibre.

Alpaca, silk, wool, flax, tencel, angora, cotton, cashmere... any number of natural, extruded and man-made furry goodnesses. With goods from Posh, a Yarn Boutique you can knit a kitten. Or your own lovable, furry pal Grover. Or a potholder, if that's how you roll.

I should know. I'm an addict and one of Sylvia's constant customers.

Sylvia was at 44th and Tennyson for over a year. We loved the little-space-that-could, but as the ranks of the devoted grew, it became clear we were outgrowing Sylvia's space.

She shopped the local storefronts, but nothing was quite right. Until...

4020 Tennyson.

The former site of "All Fired Up," a paint-your-own pottery place.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with pottery,* but... pottery hard. Yarn soft. Cuddling up with a ceramic bowl on a cold winter's night does nothing for me.

Did y'all think this happened really fast? It felt like it happened really fast. One day (a Tuesday), Red and I were puttering down the street after a trip to the DQ for some sweet sustenance and looking at the empty storefront saying, "I wonder if Syl knows about this?"

The next day, Sylvia announced the move. I'm guessing Sylvia felt how fast this went more than anyone.

Thursday's Stitch Therapy was wild and woolly, what with all the moving going on around it.

It was a little bittersweet. There's something kinda sad about outgrowing your first space. A good crowd came in for the farewell fuzz-along:

There was the last clean-up...

Then Friday brought the move.

Here's some before-and-after:

The shop Thursday... and Friday

The Back Room Thursday... and Friday

And on to the new!

Isn't it amazing how big and bright the new Posh is?

A whole crew came to help. And it was for purely altruistic reasons. Not just because we all wanted to fondle what was in The Back Room.

Patrick Carroll's right across the street is an added bonus, 'specially for Tuesday night's DK Nation.§ Now we don't have to have another beer to fortify ourselves as we speculate whether it's worth the trip up to 44th and Tennyson to get the right needles or yarn for a new project.

Location, location, location

Oh, no. Now we can just traipse¶ across the street for all our knitterly needs. And the occasional chocolate, which Sylvia always seems to have around.

Syl knows knitter needs.

For the record, there's also a new coffee shop across the street, Kyle's next door if you're in around lunch time, Hoss across the street for what purports to be the best BBQ in Denver and DJ's Berkely Cafe just down, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner# seven days a week.

And Celebrity Tattoos, if that's how you roll.

That's me, spreading the love of the 'hood and pointing out why you can come to Posh, a Yarn Boutique and never have to leave. Everything you need is right there.

Anyway, back to the actual yarn shop.

I don't know how many of you got a chance to see The Back Room** in the old place. I was going to show you the New Back Room,†† but I have managed to delete the picture. Trust me: big, clean, white walls, and mighty Mt. Yarnalot in the middle (well, there was just after the move -- it's much emptier now).

The nice thing about the large new space is that so much of the secret stash from The Back Room can come out to be loved, adopted and taken home.

And possibly nuzzled and snorted in dark of night.

Labour Day Weekend was a flurry of hauling, cleaning, arranging and stocking.

Poor Meg. All the pictures I have of her from the move are butt shots. It's a fine butt, to be sure, but perhaps not Meg's favourite remembrance of her contribution. Trust me -- so many butts because she was always head-first in the fray, working her little fingers to the bone.

As was Cynthia, Sylvia's sister. It's not easy getting full appreciation of yarn while entertaining a small child, but there she was.

The New Back Room got emptier and emptier.

And eventually, the Grand Opening on September 22nd.

It was busy, busy, busy all day.

I dropped by just to say hi and see how things were going, but I got sucked into one of the new comfy chairs and didn't leave until closing time. That's happened to me more than once.

Today's Posh, a Yarn Boutique:

Comfy chairs. Seriously. They just suck you in and hold you there. And see Amber's lovely chevron scarf on the wall? Would you believe it's one yarn? If you see Amber, ask her what kind of yarn she used. We're all dying to know.

Chock full o' yarn -- all the stuff you never knew was in The Back Room and shipments of new stull all the time (Rowan, Twinkle... mmmmm...)

There's even a sewing class on Tuesdays. It's an equal-opportunity fibre arts world.

So drop in and say hi to Sylvia and cuddle the many friendly fibres.

And check out the wall of Noro, stocked by someone with obvious taste and design skill and a keen eye for space and colour.‡‡

Thanks for letting me play!

See you at Posh!

I'll be the one in the comfy chair.

XOXO
Marin

*And you may notice I'm not mentioning that the shop is now three blocks from my house. Surely you don't imagine this influences my ecstasy in any way.

Literally.

Ha! Pun!

§The Drunken Knitters. Every Tuesday from 6:00-9:00 at Patrick Carroll's. Come on by!

Sometimes stumble.

#Did you know DJ's was open for dinner? Neither did most people. Their meatloaf is to die for.

**And if you did see it, you know it deserves capital letters.

††At least twice as big, but somehow no less full.

‡‡Um... that would be me, in case you missed the blatant self-promotion.
